What is the difference between poker probability and odds?
We should first explain the difference between probabilities and odds. Many people don’t know they are different. As an example, we will use poker hands. These are only hypothetical scenarios and should not be used for learning.
Below, we will discuss the odds and probability of poker.
The probability of a hand in poker is the percentage of hands that are drawn. If you win a pair of 20 out of 100 draws, your probability is 20/100 = 0.2% or 20%. We will explain the odds below using some math and Y to represent probability.
The probability of drawing a hand of poker is the ratio between drawing it and not drawing it. If the probability of drawing a hand is Y, then it would be 1 Y to not draw that hand.
We would use the following formula to calculate the odds of drawing the pair of poker hands in the probability example: 0.2/1-0.2, where 0.2 is the probability, and 1-0.2 is the chance of not drawing the pair. The result is 0.2/0.8 = 0.25 or 1:4.
This means that you will draw a pair one out of every four times. The odds of you drawing the pair are represented as “odds against”.
